A warning we should learn from History is that authoritarians can improve the economy initially. Just ask Hitler & Mussolini. They can see initial success in other areas as well such as war… just ask Nazi Germany.
Don’t fall in love with them because of it.
It Was Hard to Argue With Hitler’s Success
Many people stuck with Hitler because he was winning. He barreled through Europe & the whole world feared him & gave him what he wanted. He could actually bring order to Germany because people feared him. Same with Mussolini who, “made the trains run on time.”
They were winning. It made people feel like they had to support them… or at least not oppose them. Hitler came to power when 30 percent of the population was unemployed and he got a lot of people back to work.
Who could argue with success? Who doesn’t want to win? Who cares if the guy winning is a little bit nutty?
The House of Cards that’s Destined to Collapse Eventually
Perhaps the reason authoritarians can succeed at first because it is quicker to build a house of cards. No concrete needed… all you have to do is lean a few lightweight pieces of paper against each-other. But the structure is weak. It isn’t built on a moral foundation. It may take awhile as it did with Germany but it will fail (here’s what persuades me)
And Great Was the Fall of It
“But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.” (Matthew 7:26-27)
Do not trust wicked authoritarians. Even if they improve the economy, or bring order, or do anything else good at first.
Drugs feel good at first. The problem is when they wear off.
