The Battle-Cry of Bonhoeffer - When Faith Gives Reason a Back Rub

The Battle-Cry of Bonhoeffer

The bible, the gospel, Christ, the church, the faith, all are one great battle-cry against fear in the lives of human beings.

– Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Christian theologian who returned to Germany to join the resistance movement against Hitler. He was eventually tortured and killed by the Gestapo.

Faithful in the Midst of Torture by the Gestapo

During one of the worst moments, after being tortured, here is how a fellow prisoner described him,

“Still he betrayed no sign of [suffering]… he always cheered me up and comforted me… Many little notes he slipped into my hands on which he had written biblical words of comfort and hope. [He said he would resist the Gestapo] to the end and would reveal nothing.” (p. 383, Strange Glory)

On his last day, he sung together with other prisoners, “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” which included these verses…

“And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us;
we will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us.” (p. 384)
